Holidays In May

Federal law (5 U.S.C. 6103) establishes the public holidays listed in these pages for Federal employees. Please note that most Federal employees work on a Monday through Friday schedule. For these employees, when a holiday falls on a nonworkday -- Saturday or Sunday -- the holiday usually is observed on Monday (if the holiday falls on Sunday) or Friday (if the holiday falls on Saturday).

Note: These schedules shall be used by all state agencies operating under the policies, rules, and regulations of the Office of State Human Resources. Institutions of higher education and agencies requiring a 24-hour operation may adopt varying holiday schedules in keeping with operational needs provided the employees are given the same number of holidays as approved by the State Human Resources Commission. Such special holiday schedules must be filed with the Office of State Human Resources.

It is recognized that some agencies may need to adopt an additional holiday schedule applicable to their employees working on assigned shifts to maintain a 24-hour operation; this schedule would designate as holidays the specific dates of the legal observances rather than substitute weekdays when the observance occurs on Saturday or Sunday. This would be in keeping with the purpose of the holiday premium pay policy. Click here to read the state's Holiday Policy.

Public holidays in Japan (国民の祝日, kokumin no shukujitsu) were first established by the Public Holiday Law (国民の祝日に関する法律, Kokumin no Shukujitsu ni Kansuru Hōritsu, lit. "An Act on public holidays"; Act No. 178 of 1948) of 1948. It has since been amended 11 times to add additional holidays, the latest being in 2018,[1] for a total of 16 recognized holidays.[2]

Article 3 of this law specifies that when a national holiday falls on a Sunday, the next working day shall become a public holiday, known as furikae kyūjitsu (振替休日, "compensatory public holiday", literally "substitute holiday").[3] Article 3 also determines that any day that falls between two other national holidays shall also become a holiday, known as kokumin no kyūjitsu (国民の休日, literally "citizens' holiday").[4] May 4, sandwiched between Constitution Memorial Day on May 3 and Children's Day on May 5, was an annual example of such a holiday until it was replaced by Greenery Day in 2007.

As special arrangement for the 2020 Summer Olympics, the 2020 dates for Marine Day, Sports Day, and Mountain Day were moved to July 23, July 24, and August 10 respectively. With the Olympics and Paralympics postponed until 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the government left this change in place for 2020 and passed an amendment to the Olympic and Paralympic Special Measures Act to make a corresponding change to the holidays in 2021, moving them to July 22, July 23, and August 9 respectively.[12][11]

Of course, some public holidays, like Bastille day on July 14th can be culturally interesting with lots of parades and fanfare. Other Public holidays in France are low-key and are perfect for spending quality time with friends and family, but for the average tourist or newly arrived expat, it can put you in a bit of a predicament.

While we don't suggest sharing content on social media and then adding an irrelevant holiday hashtag to it, these holidays can be a chance to promote your brand in a relevant way. Not doing so could cause you to miss valuable opportunities where your brand can join the conversations taking place among members of your target audience.

The list isn't exhaustive (there are a lot of food-specific holidays out there), and these dates and hashtags may still be subject to change. But this is a great starting point for social media marketers who want to learn more about what's trending and how they can plan their content in a way that will be fun and engaging on social platforms.

Partaking in social media holidays will help you create a stronger brand voice and share posts about trending topics, helping you earn more followers in the long run. While it's not important to celebrate every single social media holiday, being aware of the holidays can help you brainstorm ideas for your marketing and implement fun, themed posts into your social media content calendar.

In addition to the eleven annual federal holidays, Inauguration Day is a twelfth holiday designated by Congress for observance every four years on January 20 following a U.S. presidential election. The Massachusetts Blue Laws control hours of operation for certain businesses and require some businesses to abide by voluntariness of employment provisions on Sundays and some legal holidays. These laws are enforced by the Attorney General's Office. The Department of Labor Standards has authority over the statewide approval of local permits allowing businesses to open on Columbus Day, Veteran's Day, Thanksgiving and Christmas when they otherwise could not open for some or all hours on those days.

Although manufacturers may lawfully operate on legal holidays (assuming permits are obtained when necessary), employees cannot be required to work on those days. The law provides a very limited exception when manufacturers can require work on holidays: when the work is both 1) " absolutely necessary" and 2) "can lawfully be performed on Sunday."

Organic reach has been in decline for some time now, but social media holidays can help brands get a bit of a boost. When coupled with the right hashtag, these holidays provide businesses with a good opportunity to reach a like-minded crowd.

Where do social media holidays come from? Some days are the byproducts of marketing campaigns. Some were declared by official organizations such as the United Nations. Others seem to have been manifested by the sheer absurdity of the Internet. Some are strictly social media holidays, while many are holidays off social media, too.

However, only May Day is a statutory holiday in France; the entitlement to other paid holidays and the conditions for working on French national holidays (such as higher pay) are left to the discretion of the employer-employee contract or union, so check the French holiday calendar when looking for jobs in France.

Most French holidays apply across the nation, although two regions (Alsace and Lorraine) have two extra public holidays. The former German territory retained these two extra public holidays when it rejoined France after World War I.

The two most widely celebrated holidays in France are Bastille Day (14 July) and All Saints Day (1 November). The first French national holiday commemorates the storming of the Bastille in 1789 and is a celebration of nationhood with communal fireworks, tricolor flags flying, and moules frites at the mairie.
